Last week, we lost a titan of American politics. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who represented Houston, Texas in the House since 1995, passed on Friday. During her time on the national stage, she pushed for many meaningful pieces of legislation, including the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which made Juneteenth a national holiday. Rep. Jackson Lee's absence will be felt in Congress as well in her community in Texas, but her legacy will live on.

As I'm sure you've heard, Hurricane Beryl has been sweeping through the Caribbean and is projected to pass near or directly over Jamaica on Wednesday. It was upgraded to a Category 5 storm on Monday.

June 19 is Juneteenth. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in our country. This important holiday was unknown to many for several years, but thanks to the tireless work of advocates, it is now rightfully recognized throughout the country.

Many people in our community have reached out to me to express that they are tired of hearing excessive car noise throughout the day and night. I agree with this sentiment - ultimately, it is a quality of life issue that needs to be addressed. Not only is it disruptive and distracting, constant exposure to loud sounds can lead to hearing damage.
