Students looking to take advantage of the Pledge to Advance Connecticut (PACT) program are encouraged to apply by Friday, July 15.

On this Independence Day, I will be doing a lot of reflecting on the status of our democracy and how we can all work together to strengthen it. I think the decisions coming out of the Supreme Court over the past week are stark evidence of the ebbs and flows of our freedoms in this country and that nothing is cast in stone.

Although I am not surprised, I am horrified that in 2022 the Supreme Court would make the radical decision to overrule Roe vs Wade and make women second class citizens. Women will die senselessly because of this ruling.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation became effective on January 1, 1863, the news took over two and a half years to make its way around the country.

Last year, our state strengthened its “Red Flag” law to protect and save lives of Connecticut residents, and avoid tragedies before they happen. It is estimated that the state's red flag law has prevented 227 suicides since its adoption. Key provisions of this law took effect on June 1, 2022.
