Up To Speed On New Education Laws?

September 10, 2019

It’s back to school season. So I wanted to take a moment to bring you up to speed on some of the important new laws we passed this session to make sure our kids get the best education possible.

  • We updated our state’s bullying and school climate laws to create a taskforce to protect the social, emotional, and physical well-being of all students. (PA 19-166)
  • We increased the minimum age to purchase cigarettes, e-cigarettes and tobacco products from 18 to 21 and banned smoking and vaping on all school property. (PA 19-13)
  • We are requiring public schools to teach computer science to better prepare students for 21st century careers. (PA 19-128)
  • We expanded the public school curriculum to include African-American, Puerto Rican and Latino studies. (PA 19-12)
  • We allowed boards of education to offer more recess time for elementary school students to aid social and cognitive development, and physical wellness. (PA 19-173)
