Dear Neighbor,

I want to wish you all a safe and Happy Labor Day Weekend. One more long weekend for our students before they get into the groove with school. I also want to take this time to show my support for all of our students and their quest to achieve at the highest level in the classroom.

As I talk about back to school, I am also saddened by the school shooting that took place at a Minneapolis Catholic School on the students' first day.

I am proud that we reacted swiftly in Middletown to protect ours. See more details below.

I've also included information this week on the state's first permanent savings account that will sustainably fund early childhood education. I hope you enjoy this week's newsletter.

Have a great weekend,

Sincerely,

Kai Belton
State Representative

Around the 100th District

I was proud to join in the celebration of National Breastfeeding Month and Black Breastfeeding Week at Community Health Center, Inc., in Middletown

Proud to champion the legislation introduced by fellow State Representative Jennifer Leeper to require licensure for lactation consultants in Connecticut. Thank you, Amy Gagliardi, for your dedication to this work!

The next step is ensuring Medicaid coverage for these vital services and creating intentional pathways to grow and support lactation consultants who look like the individuals they serve.

This legislation is about equity, health, and breaking down barriers so every family, especially those in Black and underserved communities has the resources they deserve.

Good Luck Students!

Have a great 2025-26 school year!

School Bus Safety Reminder

It's an exciting time of the year for our kids and educators who will head back to the classroom soon! I hope every student has an amazing start to the new school year.

This is also a time to remind drivers that the law requires them to slow down for school buses in your neighborhood. Here is the breakdown for any driver who fails to stop when a school bus is displaying its flashing red signal lights:

  • First offense: $450 fine.
  • Following offenses: $500 - $1,000 fine, up to 30 days in jail, or both.

Extra Protection for Our Kids

In light of a shooting in Minnesota on the first day of school, I applaud Middletown officials for being vigilant and taking precautions.

It saddens me, of course, that we have to have this kind of presence at our schools, but today, I am appreciative. Please click on the Patch story below for more details.

Have a Safe, Happy Labor Day Weekend

  • $36 million in the first year (started July 2025) to expand and improve the child care system
  • 1,000+ new spaces added by June 2026
  • Higher pay & better benefits for early childhood educators

  • More spaces and programs through a competitive process
  • Expanded pre-K from part-day to full-day, with inclusive environments for all children

This is just the beginning-a long-term investment in affordability, quality, and equity for Connecticut’s youngest learners.

Sunday is Overdose Awareness Day

On Overdose Awareness Day, we remember the lives lost to overdose and stand with the families and communities affected.

Together, let’s break the stigma around addiction, spread awareness, and work toward solutions to save lives across Connecticut.
