Did you know that winter weather not only has an effect on your commute, but can affect the national blood supply? Last year's extreme weather caused the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives across the country – and as we enter the new year, the American Red Cross has estimated that more than 300 blood drives were cancelled due to weather, resulting in about 9,000 potential donations left uncollected.

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, I'm again inspired to watch his speeches and appreciate the gift that Dr. King continues to be.

Sadly, what began as an exciting week as we welcomed the new year and gaveled in for a new legislative session ended in grief as we learned our friend and colleague, Rep. Quentin “Q” Williams was killed in a car accident early Thursday morning.
