April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and I would like to share with you that the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is taking a stand with the launch of a statewide Distracted Driving Awareness and Enforcement Campaign to help keep Connecticut roads safe.

The Hartford Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is now accepting applications for the Dr. Denorris D. Crosby Scholarship. The purpose of this $2,500 award is to support Black male high school seniors in the Greater Hartford Area that are pursuing higher education.

Earlier this month, I was proud to vote for a bill allocating $40 million in funding to special education, giving immediate support to more than 140 school districts in our state, including Bloomfield and West Hartford. The two towns received $140,199 and $1,359,800, respectively.

Attention Bloomfield residents: the Hartford Foundation of Public Giving is now accepting applications for the Greater Together Community Fund. This fund, which was established in 2019, allocates $100,000 to organizations based in the Greater Hartford region. Grants awards range from $500 to $10,000.

Last week, I hosted an immigration forum. The panel, which consisted of immigration lawyers, fellow legislators, and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, discussed the impact of the decisions currently being made in Washington, as well as tips and resources to keep immigrants and their loved ones safe. Thank you again to the panelists for lending their insight to this important issue.

HB 7013 - AN ACT CONCERNING ENHANCEMENTS TO THE LOCAL FOOD FOR SCHOOLS INCENTIVE PROGRAM AND THE CT GROWN FOR CT KIDS GRANT PROGRAM will have a public hearing in the Education committee this Wednesday.
