Stafstrom named 2017 Legislative Champion by Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs

November 28, 2017

Commending his commitment to the local community, the Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs named state Rep. Steve Stafstrom as its Legislative Champion.

“I am proud and humbled to have received this recognition from the Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs. The Y has dedicated itself to lending a hand to those in need. By further supporting the YMCA and the work it does for the community, we can ensure it remains a powerful advocate for strengthening and enriching the lives of our children and families,” Stafstrom, D-Bridgeport, said.

For four years, Stafstrom served as vice chairman of the Board of Managers at the Alpha Community Services YMCA, a branch of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, one of the state’s largest providers of supportive housing. As a board member, Stafstrom was co-chairman of the organization’s Fund Development Committee and helped the branch reach its annual campaign goal.

Stafstrom was also instrumental in recruiting volunteers from his law firm to establish a “Day of Caring,” which takes place annually.

“I am truly happy that state Rep. Stafstrom was chosen amongst the many nominees. Rep. Stafstrom is not only a caring public official who understands and fights for the needs of Bridgeport’s economically disadvantaged citizens, but is also an effective legislator, communicating regularly with his constituents, and negotiating with fellow legislators to ensure that essential needs are met, even in these difficult economic times,” said Carmen Colon, vice president of the Bridgeport Ys.

“As a state representative, he works diligently to understand local issues related to our YMCA work and serves as an advocate to ensure that the Y is a strong organization serving those in need,” said John Cattelan, executive director of CT Alliance of YMCAs.

Stafstrom was presented the award Nov. 27 at the Alpha Community Services YMCA in Bridgeport.

The CT Alliance of YMCAs is comprised of 21 YMCAs, each volunteer-led and a powerful advocate of the needs of children, families and individuals in communities throughout the state.
