Medical Debt Erased
January 14, 2026The state has announced a major step forward in easing the burden of medical debt, eliminating some or all outstanding medical bills for approximately 40,000 Connecticut residents — including families right here in Milford. Those impacted by this latest round of relief should have received a letter in the mail in December confirming that their debt has been forgiven.
This initiative works by purchasing qualifying medical debt at a fraction of its original cost—often for just pennies on the dollar—and then erasing it entirely. For some neighbors juggling the rising costs for housing, groceries, and utilities, this relief can be truly life-changing.

This marks the third round of the program. Since December 2024, Connecticut has eliminated $198 million in medical debt for 160,000 residents statewide, helping families regain financial stability and peace of mind.
Medical debt is one of the leading causes of financial stress, even for people who have insurance. This program helps ensure that a medical emergency does not permanently derail a family’s finances—and reflects our commitment to supporting the health and economic well-being of Milford residents.
