Meriden Projects Receive Funding

September 20, 2018

Meriden-area legislators announced the state approval of funds for various projects in Meriden, when the CT State Bond Commission held a special meeting in Hartford.

The Women and Families Center was awarded $3,500,000 that will assist with the development of 12 units of supportive housing for homeless youth on Colony Street in Meriden, and $3,495,000 was awarded to the City of Meriden for the next phase of the Harbor Brook Flood Control Project.

“These two projects are fundamentally top priorities for Meriden,” Rep. Santiago said. “I am grateful to the governor and the Bond Commission for awarding this critical funding to the Women and Families Center for supportive youth housing and for the Harbor Brook project, which will have a great positive economic impact. Both of these developments are of utmost local importance to us, as we focus on ensuring that our city continues to move forward.”

The award for Harbor Brook project is the second installment that consists of deepening and widening the channel between Coe Avenue and Cooper Street, construction of a sanitary sewer bridge behind Leslie Drive and construction of the adjacent portion of the Meriden Linear Trail.

“This is the continuation of many years of effort with $2.15 million approved in July to replace the Cooper Street Bridge and improve the area against flooding,” Rep. Altobello said. “These funds will remove 116 Coe Avenue from the flood way zone and will allow redevelopment of this parcel. That will contribute to economic development, commerce and employment for Meriden.”

“I believe in the mission of the Women and Families Center, and I’m very thankful that they were able to receive this important funding,” said Rep. Abercrombie.
