Hurricane Maria - A year after

September 20, 2018

Today, we solemnly commemorate the first year anniversary since Hurricane Maria hit our beloved Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. I attended various local events planned in the city, including a round-table discussion with Congressman Jim Himes and others.

The devastation left after Maria is still palpable today. We continue to mourn the loss of an estimated 2,975 individuals who died as the result of the hurricane's rage - far more than the 64 originally reported by government authorities.

Here in Connecticut, we have fought to ensure the voices and needs of our brothers and sisters are not forgotten and took action to alleviate their pain and:

  • Worked to ensure over $3 Million Dollars went back to CT schools that saw an increase in displaced students.
  • Fought for funding targeted to families needing transitional assistance and secured $500,000 for Access Agencies around the state.
  • Helped secure $600,000 for Housing/Homeless Services, to fund security deposits and first month's rent to those evacuees impacted by Hurricane Maria.

We must continue to advocate for those who are still suffering on the island and beyond.
