Governor, Legislators Stand Together on Immigration Policy

January 30, 2017

Connecticut officials are reacting to President Trump’s two Executive Orders on immigration. The president Wednesday signed an order to build a wall on the border with Mexico under the guise of security. The other executive order calls for stepping up deportations and immigration enforcement. The legislature's Black and Puerto Rican Caucus issued the following statement against those presidential executive orders:

“We condemn the actions, threats and the lack of understanding coming from Washington as it relates to the core issues of immigration policy. The intimidation and the abuse of power by those who should be protecting the safety and best interest of its citizens are not welcomed in Connecticut. Members of the Black and Latino Caucus are having serious conversations to put measures in place that will protect families and the decent, hardworking members of our immigrant community. Presidential executive actions are not the answer to all the policy concerns our nation faces.”

And Governor Malloy said:

"At every level of government, across all party affiliations, we are all called to uphold the Constitution of the United States and to protect the fundamental freedoms enshrined in our nation's founding compact," said Governor Dannel P. Malloy. "No presidential executive order can trump these liberties and I stand ready to work with the Attorney General's office to defend the constitutional rights of Connecticut individuals and communities. In Connecticut, we value diversity of thought, culture, and beliefs. We foster inclusive, welcoming communities. And our commitment to these ideals will not falter."
