Dear Neighbor,

Today, we held an official press conference at the new corner park in Plantsville to announce exciting news for Southington.

We were joined by members of our federal delegation, state and town officials, community leaders, residents, and our engineering team to celebrate the approval of a $300,000 federal grant to advance flood prevention efforts along the Quinnipiac River.

This award—up from the $275,625 originally requested due to updated project costs—will fund a comprehensive engineering study to identify long-term solutions to reduce flooding, protect homes and businesses, and strengthen local infrastructure.

This investment builds on ongoing improvements in Plantsville, including streetscape upgrades and the new pocket park, as we continue working to make the village safer, stronger, and more vibrant.

Honoring Our Hometown Hero

It was a profound honor to join veterans, family members, and residents from across Southington in welcoming home Technical Sergeant (TSGT) Donald Arthur Dorman, a World War II hero who was finally laid to rest after more than 81 years.

TSGT Dorman was killed in action during World War II and was long listed as Missing in Action. Thanks to ongoing efforts to account for America's fallen service members, his remains were identified and returned home to Southington, where our community gathered to recognize his sacrifice and service.

It was a solemn privilege to attend the calling hours, memorial service, military funeral, and homecoming events held in his memory. The tribute, organized by the Veterans Committee and supported by so many members of our community, was a powerful reminder that the sacrifices of our nation's heroes are never forgotten.

At the Celebration of Life Reception that followed the service, I was humbled to present TSGT Dorman's family with an official state memoriam on behalf of the Connecticut General Assembly. It was a small gesture of gratitude for a man who gave so much in service to our country.

Welcome home, Technical Sergeant Donald Dorman. Your service, sacrifice, and legacy will always be remembered.
 

Southington Celebrates America 250

On June 20, I was proud to join residents, community organizations, and local leaders on the Southington Town Green for the America 250 Celebration and SOCCA Pottery & Artisan Sale. The event brought together people of all ages to commemorate the beginning of our nation's 250th anniversary celebration while showcasing the strong community spirit that makes Southington such a special place to live. Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed artisan vendors, local exhibits, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the noon ceremony featuring a reading of the Declaration of Independence and a 21-gun salute, reminding us of the sacrifices and ideals that shaped our nation. Visitors also enjoyed performances by a fife and drum corps, historical displays from the Barnes Museum and Southington Historical Society, and opportunities to connect with many of the community organizations that help make Southington thrive.
A historic celebration of 250 years of American independence

Thank you to SOCCA, Celebrate 250, the many volunteers, performers, vendors, and organizations who worked hard to make this event a smashing success. It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout as our community came together to honor our shared history, celebrate our freedoms, and look ahead to the future.

As we begin marking America's 250th anniversary, I am grateful to be part of a community that proudly remembers its past while continuing to build a bright future for generations to come.

Calendar House will host a patriotic afternoon featuring snacks and a sing-along with the Herron Family Singers on Monday, June 29 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This festive program is a wonderful way to celebrate America's 250th anniversary with friends and neighbors.

Southington’s Top Teacher

Congratulations to Derynoski Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher, Julia Columbus! She was awarded the 2026 Southington Teacher of the Year for her outstanding dedication to her students and the community.
 

Post Session Town Hall

Reminder: You are invited to join me for a post session town hall and conversation about the issues that matter most to you and our Southington community.

I will meet with constituents at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30 at Southington Community Cultural Arts (93 Main Street) in Southington.

This gathering is a great opportunity to hear an update on what we accomplished during the 2026 legislative session, ask questions, provide feedback, and share ideas for future bills. Your input helps shape the work we do at the Capitol.

Increasing Benefits for First Responders

Governor Ned Lamont signed Public Act 26-12 into law, a House priority bill that I proudly supported, to strengthen recruitment and retention efforts for Connecticut’s first responders.

The new law expands benefits for state and local police officers, firefighters, correction officers, EMS personnel, and National Guard members.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Tuition Waivers: Free tuition at Connecticut State Colleges & Universities for eligible police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel.
  • Mortgage Assistance: A new program to help first responders buy homes in the communities they serve.
  • Health Coverage for Survivors: Access to state employee health insurance plan for surviving spouses and dependent children of certain public safety personnel who died in the line of duty.
  • National Guard Employment Support: Enhanced employment assistance services and an annual job fair for current and former National Guard members.

Our public safety professionals put themselves on the line every day to protect our communities. These benefits recognize their service and help ensure Connecticut can recruit and retain the dedicated workforce our residents depend on.
 

Upcoming HUSKY Health (HUSKY D) Changes

Starting January 1, 2027, some HUSKY D recipients may be subject to new work requirements. To meet the rules, individuals must fulfill at least one of the following:

  • Earn at least $580 per month
  • Work at least 80 hours per month
  • Complete at least 80 hours per month of volunteer work or community service
  • Participate in a qualified work or training program for at least 80 hours per month
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in an education program
  • Combine work, training, and/or volunteer activities totaling up to 80 hours per month

Summer Travel Means More Traffic

As Connecticut enters the busy summer travel season, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is reminding drivers to stay alert and prioritize safety on our roads.

Summer brings increased traffic as residents and visitors travel throughout the state. At the same time, construction crews are working on important infrastructure projects, and more pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists are out enjoying the warmer weather. These factors create a busier roadway environment that requires drivers to remain focused and attentive.

According to CTDOT, summer is historically the deadliest time of year on Connecticut roadways. Between June and September 2024, Connecticut recorded 116 traffic fatalities and 587 serious injuries. More than one-third of those fatalities involved motorcyclists.

CTDOT encourages drivers to take a moment before every trip to ensure they are ready to travel safely by:

  • Giving their full attention to driving
  • Checking for road conditions, delays, and construction activity
  • Making sure everyone is wearing a seat belt
  • Being prepared to share the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists
  • Avoiding impaired or fatigued driving

A few simple precautions can help prevent crashes and save lives. As you enjoy all that summer has to offer, please remember that the most important destination is arriving home safely.

National Pollinator Week

CTDOT is recognizing National Pollinator Week (June 22–28) by highlighting its growing Pollinator Program, which now includes 167 conservation areas across approximately 260 acres statewide.
 

These habitats support bees, monarch butterflies, and other pollinators through native plantings and reduced mowing practices. Pollinator corridors can be seen blooming along Connecticut highways throughout the summer, helping sustain the ecosystems and food systems that depend on them.

CTDOT encourages everyone to appreciate these conservation areas safely and reminds motorists not to stop along highways to take photos.
