Dearly Beloved Neighbor,

May is Maternal Mental Health Month, and every first Wednesday in May is Maternal Mental Health Day. This is a day we shine a spotlight on critical mental health issues mothers and families experience, particularly in those cultures where these issues have been stigmatized and not addressed in the way they should be, leading to even more issues that remain in silence.

A highlight of Maternal Mental Health Month is “Maternal Mental Health Week,” which began on April 29th and concludes on May 5th. This week is so critical because it aims to illuminate the essential support system that helps mothers and birthing parents thrive. This initiative is a reminder that mental health is just as vital as physical health during both the prenatal and postpartum periods.

Maternal Mental Health Month focuses on the psychological and emotional well-being of mothers and birthing parents. It’s an opportunity to discuss, destigmatize, and address the mental health challenges that can accompany pregnancy and mother/parenthood, including postpartum depression, anxiety, and stress.

As we hold dear the important observance of Maternal Mental Health Month this year, please join me in raising awareness by sharing information and resources within your community and on social media. You can start discussions in your communities about the importance of maternal mental health. Also, please feel free to volunteer your time or expertise to enhance the reach and impact of our efforts.

Remember, your role is crucial. Every story shared, every conversation had, and every resource provided could be the key to helping a mother reach out for the support she needs. Your participation is not just valuable – it’s vital.
