Great American Boom

New Britain’s annual Great American Boom Independence Day celebration is planned for Saturday, July 4, marking the return of the event to Walnut Hill Park under Mayor Bobby Sanchez. The celebration will once again be free to attend, the first time in several years that admission has been free.

The event is expected to draw approximately 40,000 attendees, continuing its tradition as one of the city’s largest annual community gatherings.

Festivities begin at 3 p.m. and include:

  • Live entertainment
  • Food trucks
  • Inflatables and children's amusements
  • Roller skating
  • Face painting
  • Bungee jump
  • Laser tag
  • Rock climbing wall
  • Clowns and magic performances by Amazing Andy

Children’s amusement wristbands will be available for $10.

Entertainment schedule:

  • 5 to 6:30 p.m.: Soul Sound Revue
  • 7 to 9 p.m.: Latanya Farrell

The evening concludes with the city's signature fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., which is expected to be visible to thousands of additional spectators gathered throughout New Britain.

The event os one of New Britain’s signature summer traditions, bringing residents and visitors together for a family-friendly celebration of Independence Day featuring music, activities, and fireworks.

Celebrating America's 250th

Join us as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary with a beloved piece of our nation's history! The Newington Senior & Disabled Center is hosting two free community screenings of the classic musical "1776 "on Tuesday, June 30, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

This inspiring film brings to life the spirited debates and historic moments that led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence through unforgettable performances and music. Whether you're a longtime fan or seeing it for the first time, it's a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our nation's founding and celebrate together as a community.

The event is free and open to residents of all ages, with complimentary snacks and refreshments provided. No registration is required—just come and enjoy this special America 250 celebration with family, friends, and neighbors.

Scholarship Recipients

On Thursday, June 18, the Registrar of Voters office held the first annual Marie M. Fox Scholarship Award Ceremony. At this event, coworkers for the last year in Newington were recognized for all they do to keep our elections running smoothly and two scholarships were awarded To graduating seniors.

The town extends congratulations to Aman Arora and Victoria Bucior, who exemplify The dedication and service in the example of Marie Fox. 
 

Congratulations, Lisa Rydecki

The Town of Newington is celebrating the career and accomplishments of Lisa Rydecki, Deputy Director of Finance, as she prepares to retire on June 30, after 18 years of dedicated service. The Newington Town Council formally recognized Lisa’s contributions and expressed its appreciation for her professionalism, leadership, and commitment to the Town and its residents.

Appointed Deputy Director of Finance in January 2008, Lisa played a key role in managing the Town’s financial operations and maintaining fiscal responsibility. She was instrumental in the annual audit process, helping Newington earn the prestigious Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting through her commitment to accuracy and high standards.

Lisa also played an important role in developing and managing the Town’s budget, helping ensure Newington remained financially strong while meeting the needs of residents. In addition, she oversaw grant administration, maximizing funding opportunities and supporting important community projects.

Known for her positive attitude and strong work ethic, Lisa became a familiar and valued presence at Town Hall, often brightening colleagues’ days with her energy, encouragement, and friendly smile.

Town officials, coworkers, family, friends, and community members join in thanking Lisa Rydecki for her outstanding service and dedication to Newington.
