Leading Passage of Absentee Voting for All in the House
April 27, 2026
The House recently advanced a landmark bill to strengthen and safeguard our democracy, ensuring that voting in Connecticut remains secure, accessible, and protected from intimidation.
This legislation ensure our elections in 2026 and beyond are free and fair.
After Connecticut voters overwhelmingly approved expanded absentee voting in 2024, we had a responsibility to modernize our laws and provide, clear, consistent guidelines for how eligible voters can cast an absentee ballot. House Bill 5001, which I was proud to author as Co-Chair of the Government Administration & Elections Committee, fulfills that mandate.
With its passage, Connecticut will join 36 other states and the District of Columbia in allowing every eligible voter to cast an absentee ballot. This reform expands access while maintaining the strong safeguards that protect the integrity of our elections.
The bill also takes important steps to counter a Republican threat to nationalize our elections. Our legislation bans Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or any other federal officials from being 250 feet of a polling place or other sensitive election sites without permission from state election officials or a court order. Additionally, it empowers our Attorney General to act against interference or intimidation.
Voting should be free from fear. No eligible voter should hesitate to cast a ballot because of the presence of armed federal agents. This legislation reinforces our commitment to ensuring safe, secure elections where every voice can be heard.
The right to vote is sacred, and I will always work to defend and strengthen it.
The Senate now has until May 6 at midnight to pass the measure.
