Dear Friend,

This is my State Capitol update for the week of March 21.

If you prefer to watch rather than read, click the image below to hear about the issues contained in this newsletter.

Last weekend I attended services for Sheila Anson, the beloved long time Town Clerk in Washington, CT, at First Congregational Church of Washington CT.  So many people attended that they had to provide overflow space in the parish house, where I sat.  Throughout the beautiful service, which included tributes from many people throughout the community, I looked at this banner.  It was a moving reminder of what it means to serve your community and all of the people within it, and beyond it.

Northwest Corner Events

As in many other rural areas, the Northwest Corner of Connecticut can be described as a "healthcare desert." There are not enough primary care providers to meet the demand, and it is difficult to attract primary care providers to the region. The lack of adequate access to health care can make these towns less attractive for residents, which in turn impacts our stores, schools, and services due to a lack of employees. Second-home owners often travel outside of the region to access health care.

I will join a panel of local experts will discuss this issue and address what can be done to make the Northwest Corner a better and healthier place to live. Join us to hear from moderator Nancy Heaton, CEO of Foundation for Community Health; Joanne Borduas, CEO of the Community Health and Wellness Center; Meghan Kenny, director of SVNA Home Assistance and Litchfield County Home Assistance; and Christina McCulloch, CEO of Sharon Hospital.

The event will be held tonight at 7:30 PM at the Housatonic Valley Regional High School.
