Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday! I hope you are staying cool.

Please see below for information about a blood drive in Westport, groundbreaking in Norwalk, and more!

    Extreme Hot Weather Protocol
Governor Lamont has issued another Extreme Hot Weather Protocol beginning on Sunday July 14 through through 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17.

As a reminder, try to stay hydrated - because bodies lose fluid through sweat, dehydration is common while experiencing very high temperatures. It is strongly encouraged to:

    • Drink more water than usual.
    • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more fluids.
    • Drink two to four cups of water every hour while working or exercising outside.
    • Avoid alcohol or liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
    • Remind others to drink enough water.

AARP CT Livable Communities Grant Updates
AARP Connecticut invites nonprofit organizations and municipalities across the state to apply for the 2024 Livable Communities Grant Program. The grant program is dedicated to funding “quick-action” projects in Connecticut communities, aims to help the state’s neighborhoods, towns and cities be great places to live for people of all ages.
Grants can range from small, short-term activities to larger, permanent solutions, but the maximum amount of any single grant will be $5,000. All applications should be for a project of $5,000 or less. They should also be for projects in Connecticut that are focused on improving the lives of those 50+ and make a positive impact within one of the following eight Domains of Livability, including:
    • Outdoor spaces and buildings
    • Transportation
    • Housing
    • Social Participation
    • Respect and Social Inclusion
    • Work and Civic Engagement
    • Communication and Information
    • Community and Health Services

Comprehensive details about the program and applications can be found HERE. All proposals must be submitted to CTLivable@aarp.org by 5 p.m. ET, August 16, and all projects must be completed within 12 months from the day grant funding is received.

    Blood Drive in Westport
VFW Joseph J. Clinton Post 399/August Matthias American Legion Post 63 has hosted monthly blood drives for the past 4 years. The next blood drive is July 31 (noon to 6 p.m). Click here for an appointment. (use this sponsor code: VFWWESTPORT), or call 800-733-2767.
    Legion of Honor

Congratulations to Clayton Chalfant on receiving the Legion of Honor from the French Consul General last weekend, the French Republic's highest honorary distinction!  It was an honor to attend and support this Westport and American hero and his family at Town Hall on July Fourth weekend.

He left Westport and enlisted in the Army at only 18 (like my grandfather) and saw action all over France, including in the Battle of the Bulge. Thank you Mr. Chalfant for fighting for freedom and democracy and for your leadership here at home in Westport after the war, including at Westport's VFW. Many spoke about France's support for our own independence and our support for their freedom from fascism and tyranny in WWII. Mr. Chalfant's enduring love for France and the proud Franco-American War Vets who came to pay special tribute to him reminded me of Benjamin Franklin's quote: "Chaque personne a deux pays, le sien et la France."

    Félicitations!

    Flooding Mitigation Groundbreaking
Earlier this week, I joined Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff, and other officials for the groundbreaking celebration of the Lockwood Lane and Heather Lane Storm Drainage Improvement Project. Shovels will be in the ground in two weeks time!

This project proactively addresses the threats of climate change by ensuring neighborhood residents are equipped with sustainable and resilient infrastructure to mitigate flooding. This Storm Drainage Improvement Project will upgrade the existing stormwater system and separate the combined sanitary and storm system into two systems. This effort will positively impact residences in the whole neighborhood: people who live on Byselle Road, Cory Lane, George Avenue, Heather Lane, Jackson Drive, Katy Lane and Lockwood Lane.

Thank you to the State Bond Commission for allocating funding to this vital project.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions and concerns you may have - I can be reached at Dominique.Johnson@cga.ct.gov, or through my office phone - 860-240-8585.

    Have a great weekend!

    Sincerely,

    Dominique Johnson
    State Representative
