$5.4M in Funding for Hamden Arts & Cultural Center

March 14, 2023
Earlier today, the State’s Community Investment Fund (CIF) granted $5.4 million to the Town of Hamden for a proposed Arts and Cultural Center in the Newhall neighborhood.

This funding will enable the town to demolish the long abandoned old Hamden Middle School – a site that has sat vacant for more than 20 years and become a dangerous eyesore.

Demolishing the building is the necessary first step in making vital improvements to the Newhall neighborhood and eventually building an Arts and Cultural Center on the property. That Center will eventually provide numerous art, historic and educational services, as well as serve as a hub for economic development in the area.

I want to thank the Governor and his staff for approving the funding, as well as Department of Economic Development (DECD) Commissioner, Alexandra Daum and her staff from DECD, who toured the site and recognized the need, and Mayor Garrett and her staff who had the vision for this project. I look forward to continuing to work with them all to achieve a complete transformation of the area to serve better the community.
