Celebration of Big Investment into Willimantic Whitewater Park

February 17, 2023

We are taking big strides toward turning a downtown park into an outdoor destination right here in Windham. On February 17, Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz celebrated $500,000 in state funding from the Executive Branch for trails along the Whitewater Park. The goal is to add more amenities and to make the park more attractive.

The Willimantic Whitewater Park will become a new place for people to visit across the Northeast, and it will make our downtown look unique. Right now, designers are working on what the park will eventually look like, which may include kayaking.

Mayor Tom Devivo, Dawn Niles, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, Rep. Susan Johnson, and Susan Hunter are playing a roll in revitalizing this green space.

This project started more than 20 years ago when crews began cleaning up dilapidated structures and environmental hazards on the water and along the riverbed. Now the entire area looks so much more inviting! I want to thank Barbara McGrath and her team for all their hard work.

We have all been reaping the benefits of the cleanup. For the past two years, the Willimantic Farmer's Market has taken place on a walkway along the Willimantic River. This would not have been possible without Jana Roberson, who is the President of the Board of Directors for the park.

We saw the potential in this green space many years ago. We will continue to work together and invest in this beautiful area in order to turn it into a lovely destination for everyone.
