New Pre-K Classroom Opened with Grant Funding

April 8, 2022

Wednesday night, I joined Hamden Public School (HPS) members to celebrate the opening of a new Pre-K classroom and Ridge Hill School.

As a former Board of Education member, I know the importance of early literacy programs. That is why I focused on securing funding in last year’s budget specifically dedicated to creating this new space. This is now the 11th pre-K classroom in Hamden, and the only one in Southern Hamden. The pre-K teachers and staff put in a long day: 7:30AM to 5 PM, 365 days a year (pre-K is open even over the summer). At risk children in these classes get critical exposure to language development (reading and writing) and other skills so they are not behind when they start Kindergarten.

I want to thank Assistant Superintendent Chris Melillo and Ridge Hill Principal Stacie D’Antonio, who made the request for these funds and then made the classroom happen, as well Hamden’s Pre-K Director Jisel Cordero and her staff for all that they do!
