Updates

May 29, 2020

I did not sleep well last night after I watched the protests erupting in Minneapolis, a police precinct burning and thousands of people in cities around the country acting on an understandable range of emotions following the death of George Floyd. This morning I woke up to the news that a journalist had been arrested, later released and apologized to by the Minnesota Governor. I am sure each of you has had your own response to what is happening around the country.

As your elected State Representative, it is my duty to work for justice, to address structural barriers and assure the freedom of the press. I take this very seriously and I mourn with all who mourn today, especially the family of George Floyd.

Congratulations to Wakeman Boys and Girls Club Outstanding Youth

Last night, I joined the Zoom event for the Wakeman Youth of the Year celebration. It was such a joy to celebrate the achievements of all of the nominees, including the Southport Clubhouse Boy and Girl of the Year, Brendan McMahon and Mary Corrigan and Smilow Burroughs Boy and Girl of the Year, Micaiah Boykin and Byron Francis.

I was able to snap a photo of three of the four of them. Though we were not together in person, I could sense their family, friends, adult mentors and Wakeman leaders beaming with pride. Mary, a Stratfield alum, shared, “I want to do for my community what they have done for me, which is to be a guiding force in a time of need.” Bryon, the first ever Smilow Burroughs clubhouse member to be attending an Ivy League school, said that the Clubhouse was, “a place to explore my hopes and dreams.”

I share this with you today, because in a moment of tremendous national pain, particularly for our family, friends and neighbors who are people of color, it is important to see that young people like these four and all of the other amazing nominees, give us hope. They are not just hope for our future, but for today. They will help take us to the New Next as I heard the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska describe it in a call today. Congratulations to each of them.

Social, Recreational and Religious Gatherings

Earlier today the Governor announced a relaxation on the restrictions of the number of people who can gather. Inside your home, gatherings of 10 or fewer people and outdoors 25 or fewer may now gather. Public health experts remind us and I implore you to please maintain the 6 feet of social distance and wear a mask in order to mitigate risk. Residents age 65 or older are still encouraged to stay home and stay safe.

Houses of Worship have been given the go-ahead to have 25% capacity or a maximum of 100 people indoors and up to 150 outdoors, again, all with the 6 foot social distance.

Fairfield’s beaches and parks have been open since last weekend. Please click here for information on parking availability and guidelines.
