Rep. Linehan Celebrates Southington's Purchase of 5.5 Acres for Open Space

March 13, 2020

Hartford, Conn. – When the Southington Town Council met to vote on Monday, the final hurdle cleared for the purchase of two plots for open space use in the Marion neighborhood of town. State Representative Liz Linehan (D-Cheshire, Southington, Wallingford) applauded this final administrative step, which allows for Southington to acquire these parcels located at 1205 Marion Avenue and 136 School Street, amounting to a total of 5.5 acres of land.

"This is great news for the town and wildlife in our area," said Rep. Linehan. "Preserving these plots for public use will make our community and environment a happier and healthier place to live."

These purchases come in the months following a November referendum in which voters approved the use of $2 million in town resources for the purchase of land for public use; and an $82,000 grant the town received in January through the Open Space and Land Acquisition Program run through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

After unanimous votes of approval on February 24th from the town council and on March 3rd from the Planning and Zoning Commission, Southington bought the Marion and School Street properties for a total of $105,000 and $160,000, respectively.
