Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday! This week's eblast includes some great news for our kindergarten classes, info about the Department of Transportation's campaign to combat speeding, and more. You can click the links below to navigate between sections.

Play-Based Learning at Fairfield Kindergarten Classes
I was so excited to see the Fairfield Public Schools announce the implementation of play-based learning for all kindergarten classes! According to FPS, "This new instructional focus will provide students with the opportunity to problem-solve, build independence, cooperate and co-construct with peers, and socialize! Play-based learning also has been shown to improve executive functioning skills such as planning, attention, focus, organization, and working memory."

This new style of learning comes from legislation the General Assembly passed in 2023. As Vice Chair of the Education Committee I was a passionate advocate for this bill's passage into law, and I'm thrilled to see it rolling out here in Fairfield!

DOT's Campaign to Combat Speeding
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a high-visibility anti-speeding campaign aiming to increase awareness and promote safer driving behaviors with increased speed limit enforcement.

In 2022, Connecticut recorded 115 fatalities due to speeding and reckless driving. This is unacceptable.

The campaign will provide local and state police grants to increase enforcement and officer visibility on the roads.

Deaths from speeding and reckless driving are completely preventable, and through this campaign I believe we can save many lives.

Adult Outdoor Fitness Center Ribbon-Cutting
It was wonderful to attend the unveiling of the new ADA Outdoor Adult Fitness Center at the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities! This new fitness center was made possible, in part, by the $350,000 sate funding that the delegation was thrilled to secure for the Bigelow Senior Center.

No matter your age, it's critical for your health to spend time outside being active with friends and family, and this new fitness center provides just that for our residents! It is open to the public and I hope you will go check it out.

Out of the Darkness Walk
Registration has opened for the Oct. 26 Fairfield County Out of the Darkness Walk at Sherwood Island.

These walks across the country seek to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention, sending the message that no matter how hard things get, you are never alone.

This year's walk begins on Oct. 26 at 10am at Sherwood Island State Park. There are plenty of opportunities to become a team captain, volunteer, or sponsor. I hope you'll consider attending this profound event.

Family Day: All About Conservation + Crafting Happy Hour
Next Saturday, July 20, the Fairfield Museum will offer two great events to celebrate their new exhibit, "Pioneering Conservation."

From 11am-2pm, the Fairfield Museum will host a family-friendly event with hands-on activities including a Green Song Singalong with the Fairfield Pollinator Pathway & Fairfield Forestry Committee, a touch tank from The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, arts and crafts, and more. In case of bad weather the program will take place inside the museum. You can click here for more information on this fun event!

And from 4-6pm, you can attend a crafting happy hour to create a unique framed design adorned with pressed flowers and greenery! This 21+ event is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Supplies and refreshments will be provided. Click here to register!
