Updates from State Rep. Anne Hughes for March 30, 2026

March 30, 2026

Once again I donned my Lady Liberty costume and joined amazing people like fellow state Rep. Mary Mushinsky at the No Kings rally in Hartford on Saturday.

As we have seen time and again throughout history, democracies are born and perish from within.

If we don't do the work -- which sometimes means showing up to a rally in Statue of Liberty threads -- then we will fail.

Eight million people attended rallies nationwide collectively said that won't happen on our watch.

'Beyond Survival'

At a time when the cycle of intimate partner violence is as devastating as ever, our justice system woefully lags in adopting trauma-informed sentencing for  survivors of compounded domestic violence.

We had an impactful screening of ‘Beyond Survival’ to educate policymakers about the timeliness this Session of adopting The Survivors Justice Act here in Connecticut. I learned so much from these fierce survivors of domestic violence and incarceration.

WestConn President's Inauguration

A presidential inauguration worth celebrating ... in cap and gown, no less!

On Friday I attended the inauguration of Dr. Jesse Bernal, the 10th president of Western Connecticut State University.

As Dr. Bernal noted during the event, ”Somewhere on this campus right now, there's a student who almost didn't come back this semester. Who's wondering if they belong. If you see them, tell them they do. That’s the work. ...

"During my address, I asked our community to carry one question into every room and every decision: What does it take for our people to thrive? Not survive. Not get by. Thrive.”

That’s the charge to all of us elected officials for our state as well. I accept President Bernal’s charge!

'Glory' Screening

A fundraiser that includes cocktails and a screening of the 1989 film "Glory" will take place at Greenwood Features, 269 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, on April 23 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $30, and include a cocktail hour and movie screening.

All proceeds benefit the Redding Celebrates America 250 Concert on May 30, featuring Charles Ives's music performed by the Greater Bridgeport Symphony - joined by talented student musicians from Joel Barlow High School - in a special educational and community celebration of our nation's 250th anniversary.

Clarification/Correction

In my last eblast, I jumped the gun and said that Joel Barlow High sophomore Alexandra Humphrey's presentation before the school board led to an agreement to install solar panels at the school.

The project, however, isn't that far along. The school board DID agree to have the Green Bank provide specs on the proposal. It has not, however, taken any action to green light the project.

My apologies for the error.

Happy Passover!
