Dear Neighbor,

I wanted to share that information that may affect your commute next month. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has announced that Route 15 southbound Exit 60 off-ramp in Hamden, I-91 northbound Exit 12 off-ramp in North Haven, and I-84 east and westbound Exit 46 off-ramps in Hartford will be closed to traffic beginning on July 10, 2024, for wrong-way detection installations.

There may be lane closures, Monday through Sunday at various times depending on the Location of the work.

The detour information is as follows:

I-91 Northbound Exit 12 Off-Ramp in North Haven
  • Traffic will be detoured off at Exit 11, to Washington Avenue to Exit 12 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Route 15 Southbound Exit 60 Off-Ramp in Hamden
  • Traffic will be advised to get off at Exit 62, to Whitney Avenue then to Dixwell Avenue to Exit 60 from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

These systems are being installed to reduce wrong-way crashes on high-risk freeway exit ramps. The reason for the ramp closure is to complete the wrong-way system installation and to operationally test the system to verify it is functioning properly.

A typical wrong-way detection system consists of a 360-degree camera deployed at the ramp intersection to detect vehicles traveling in the wrong direction and wrong-way signs with red circular LED lights, which are activated to flash when a wrong-way vehicle is detected. Almost all construction will occur above the ground, with the installation of additional 360-degree cameras at the intersections and corresponding revisions to the traffic signal controller.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns at Josh.Elliott@cga.ct.gov or 860-240-8585.

Sincerely,

Josh Elliott
