Dear Neighbor,

Oystering was an important part of New Haven's history, and we are bringing back that history by reestablishing our oyster beds.

I'm excited to report that Connecticut has launched its first-ever oyster trail. The Connecticut Oyster Trail meticulously maps out the diverse array of oyster farms and culinary destinations statewide, encourages residents and visitors alike to savor the local flavor of Connecticut's acclaimed oysters.

The protection of oysters is important to me and to Connecticut's economy, and as a member of the Environment committee, I have pushed for legislation that will benefit the shellfish industry.

In 2021, I cosponsored Public Act No. 21-24, AN ACT CONCERNING CONNECTICUT SHELLFISH RESTORATION PROGRAM AND THE CONNECTICUT SEAFOOD COUNCIL.

The bill included provisions that would increase the population of oysters in Long Island Sound and the ability to pursue non state dollars to purchase and distribute shell on the designated natural oyster sea beds.

Restoring shellfish beds in Long Island Sound will enhance the native natural sea beds the beneficial filtrations the aura stores, as well as  provide an increasing cultural resiliency to adverse weather events.

The protection and preservation of oysters is vital to New Haven - we are a shoreline community that is home to two stops on the newly established trail - Shell & Bones Oyster Bar & Grille and Fair Haven Oyster Company, I encourage you to check out all of the oyster farms, restaurants and stores that are on the trail.

Sincerely,

Patricia Dillon
