Legislative Update

September 25, 2019

I have been focusing on a number of important public health related issues during the last few weeks and wanted to give you a quick update.

For those of you who have reached out to me about the recent news from the Governor’s office on their pledge to eliminate the religious exemption for vaccinating schoolchildren, it is important to keep in mind that this issue will come back to the state legislature and will take its normal legislative course. Before changes to existing law are implemented, approval by the House of Representative and the State Senate are needed.

I was also quoted in a news story by the New Haven Register about the widespread cases of human papillomavirus (HPV). I am glad to see new efforts dedicated to educating parents and caregivers about the importance of this vaccine and look forward to more discussion on this matter. The Public Health Committee heard from the public on this issue, but the proposal that came before us didn’t advance this past session. Please read the full story here.

National Suicide Awareness Month

Please join me to help bring public awareness to Suicide Prevention as September has been designated Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a tragic decision that affects more people’s lives today than ever and we must do everything we can to help prevent these tragedies. In the United States alone, at least 44,000 people commit suicide every year. If you suspect someone is struggling with suicidal thoughts, the Suicide Prevention Hotline is there to help – 800-273-8255. Also, a great local organization - Prevent Suicide Connecticut is available, as well as 2-1-1.

Vaping Forum

In light of the alarming increase in the number of teens who tried vaping last year and the recent news on this rising trend, I will be joining several colleagues and local officials for a Vaping Forum in Branford to discuss the measures we have put in place to combat vaping among our young people. Stay tuned for more details.

Around Town

Speaking to Krystin from Politica CT about the $15/hr Minimum Wage measure we passed this session

Thank you to the Civic Association of Short Beach for holding this meeting giving the opportunity to discuss the important issues facing our neighborhood. We were joined by Branford Police Department’s Lieutenant O’Malley and our First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove. I’m happy to attend any meeting in the 102nd district. Just let me know about it!
