BioScience News!

We passed several laws this year that will help the growing technology and the biosciences industry with the goal of making it easier to do business and attracting more companies to Connecticut.

You may not realize it, but more than two dozen pharmaceutical and biotech companies call Branford home already.

This week my colleagues and I visited ViiV Healthcare, a company that does groundbreaking research and is a leader in the treatment of HIV. While they have offices all over the world, they shared with us that they are committed to growing their business here in Connecticut, and Branford specifically, because Connecticut has a great quality of life for raising their families.

I look forward to the exciting new products they will be bringing to the market very soon.

Also, I would like to congratulate Branford-based FreeThink Technologies for being chosen “Innovator of the Month” by– U.S. Senator Chris Murphy. A research and development company founded in 2011 through the UCONN Technology Incubator Program (TIP), the company focuses on developing innovative technologies to accelerate the determination of shelf-life and stability for pharmaceuticals, consumer products, nutraceuticals and medical devices.

FreeThink employs 28 people at their headquarters in Branford, with additional representatives in New Jersey and Missouri, as well as globally in China and India. For more information on this commendation click here.

Lastly, I wanted to bring to your attention that a diagnostics biotech company is expanding its footprint in Branford with a planned move to a new 16,200-square-foot facility. A spokeswoman for Tangen Biosciences Inc. said the six-year-old company will move its 24 employees from a 2,700-square-foot space at 780 Main Street to the larger location at 20 Commercial Street in August.

Tangen is using the proceeds to advance its portable molecular diagnostics platform, which it calls TangenDx, through the federal regulatory approval process, with the goal of a commercial launch in 2020.
