We Expanded Your Sales-Tax-Free Week Savings. It Starts 8/16

August 13, 2026
Connecticut Sales Tax Free Week is back! From Sunday, August 16, through Saturday, August 22, families across Stamford and Connecticut can save money on back-to-school shopping and other everyday essentials.

Eligible clothing, footwear, and backpacks are exempt from Connecticut’s 6.35% sales tax when purchased from Connecticut retailers and participating online retailers.

This year, my colleagues and I expanded the exemption to include these items up to $300, helping Stamford families stretch their budgets as students get ready to head back to school.

We have also permanently removed the sales tax on non-electronic school supplies such as pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, paper, folders, binders, lunch boxes, and more.

Please note that some items are not eligible for the exemption, including:

  • Specialized athletic or protective clothing and footwear
  • Jewelry, handbags, luggage, and umbrellas
  • Wallets, waders, and wetsuits

Whether you’re shopping for your children, preparing for the new school year, or simply looking for a chance to save on clothing and footwear, I hope Sales Tax Free Week provides some welcome savings for Stamford families and helps make preparing for the new school year a little more affordable.
