Following recent tragedies on Route 7, many residents have asked about previous studies, planning efforts, and current safety initiatives. To help answer those questions, I've compiled publicly available reports and resources related to the Route 7 corridor.

Route 7 Transportation & Land Use Study (WestCOG 2011 )

Examines the Route 7 corridor from a transportation and land use perspective, including traffic operations, access management, transit, and long-term corridor planning.

Regional Transportation Safety Plan (2021/2022)

A regional safety plan that analyzes crash trends and identifies strategies to reduce fatalities and serious injuries throughout the WestCOG region.

CTDOT Route 7 Corridor Safety Update (July 2026)

Following the July 2026 fatal crash on Route 7, the Connecticut Department of Transportation completed a corridor evaluation and released an overview of current conditions, recent crash data, and planned safety improvements.

The letter outlines:

  • Recent traffic speed and crash analysis; 
  • Short-term safety improvements already underway; 
  • Mid-term engineering evaluations, including lighting, lane delineation, and potential median treatments; 
  • Ongoing planning efforts with WestCOG and local municipalities; and 
  • Additional recommendations related to enforcement, speed feedback signs, and automated traffic enforcement.
