I wanted to share recent coverage in the Hartford Courant highlighting legislation I introduced following concerns raised here in Bethel. As many of you know, questions were raised locally about the Vessel housing proposal specifically around safety, construction methods, and whether municipalities have enough information at the time of approval to evaluate those issues. To better understand how these types of projects were being reviewed at the state level, my office filed a Freedom of Information request. What we found were safety questions, including fire protection, means of egress, and testing documentation, being raised late in the process when new construction methods were used. That’s what led me to introduce legislation. Our bill ensures that when developers use non-traditional or proprietary construction systems, they must demonstrate upfront, before approvals are granted, that those designs can meet life-safety codes. This is not about one project or one developer. It’s about making sure towns like Bethel are not put in a position where they are asked to approve projects without the information needed to evaluate safety. I’m proud that this bill has now been voted out of the Insurance & Real Estate Committee and is moving forward. |
