Let's Open the Danbury Welcome Center

May 22, 2019

I am pleased to announce that the House of Representatives has passed H.B. 7306, The Speaker's Blue Ribbon Commission on Tourism Bill. The bill, which I was proud to co-sponsor, will reopen Visitor Welcome Centers across Connecticut, including the Danbury Welcome Center, which borders the 2nd District.

As we enter the unofficial start of summer, these Centers will welcome visitors from across the country with improved signage and important information on Connecticut’s tourist attractions. The legislation also creates a CT Tourism Council to improve marketing of CT's many wonderful attractions.

Connecticut's tourism industry supports more than 82,000 jobs, $14.7 billion in business sales, and $1.7 billion in tax revenues.

According to a recent study released by the CT Office of Tourism, in 2018 the CT tourism industry produced:

  • a 5.5% increase in total business sales
  • 84,254 jobs
  • $2.2 billion in tax revenues, including $960 million in state/local taxes
  • 5.4 million visits to CT's tourism site: CTVisit.com

Once passed by the Senate, this legislation will greatly improve the tourist experience for visitors to our great state and will have a direct impact on tourism dollars and the businesses and communities they support.
