HB 7119 Elevator Inspection Bill, Inspired by Bella Vista, Receives Public Hearing

Earlier this month, the Public Safety and Security Committee held a public hearing on a proposed bill that I put in with Senator Martin Looney. HB 7119 An Act Concerning the State Fire Prevention Code, State Fire Safety Code, State Building Code and Elevator Inspections, comes in response to complaints my office has received regarding elevators that have broken down in New Haven's Bella Vista Apartments.

The Connecticut Department of Labor has brought together several programs and services to assist residents who have lost their jobs with the federal government. There are approximately 18,800 federal employees working in Connecticut.

$40 Million for Special Education in the State

My colleagues and I have heard from cities and towns across Connecticut that special education costs are squeezing local budgets. Students and families are dealing with the repercussions of a broken system, and while the legislature considers long-term solutions for our special education system, we recognized our school districts needed immediate relief. That's why I proudly voted in favor of a bill to allocate $40 million for special education.

Severe Winter Weather Protocol in Effect Until February 22

Governor Lamont announced that due to a weather forecast indicating that Connecticut will experience a blast of arctic temperatures and breezy winds over the next several days, he is directing the state’s severe cold weather protocol to go into effect beginning at 6 p.m. on February 16 and remaining in effect through noon on February 22.
