First off is the Veterans Crisis Line. This is a 24/7 phone line that can provide immediate help to those having suicidal thoughts. By dialing 988 and then pressing 1, you will be connected with a qualified responder who will listen, help you, and provide you with resources in the future. You can also chat online or text 838255.

In Connecticut, you can connect with a health care suicide prevention coordinator who can get you the help you need.

It is also important to know the location of your nearest VA medical center. No matter your discharge status or if you are enrolled in VA health care, these locations are here to help. Click here to find your nearest medical center.

Finally, please talk to your loved ones and people you trust. No matter what, you are not alone, and there will always be people who want to help.

This week, Connecticut took a powerful step forward in recognizing Military Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day.

This effort is rooted in the legacy of Command Sergeant Major Gary Sirois, a decorated veteran and Plainville native whose life and service continue to inspire action. This event was deeply personal and community-driven—from the moment Sandy reached out to me, I knew we had to act.

As a behavioral health nurse, I’ve spent years walking alongside patients who carry the invisible wounds, including veterans battling PTSD, depression, and the lingering effects of trauma. Recognizing this day will help patients feel seen, open doors to conversations that were once shut, and remind every veteran that healing is not weakness - it’s courage.

Next Thursday, we remember the 2,996 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the thousands who have died since due to exposure to toxic chemicals, and the countless lives that were forever changed. May we never forget the people whose lives were stolen from us through this act of terror, and all of the first responders, construction crews, service members, and everyday citizens who saved lives and helped our country rebuild.

Though we move further away from that fateful day each year, we must continue to honor those Americans we lost and never stop the fight against terror and for peace.

Labor Day is upon us, and it is a time to reflect on the contributions of workers across every industry. Their dedication, resilience, and continued fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity on the job have shaped our nation and continue to move us forward.

As we celebrate the American labor movement, we honor the hardworking people who have built and strengthened this country.

While we enjoy this well-earned day of rest, let’s also recommit ourselves to advancing policies that uplift working families and ensure every worker is treated with the respect they deserve.

Following offenses: $500 - $1,000 fine, up to 30 days in jail, or both
