Dear Neighbor,

Cheers to the 2025 Graduates of the NLPD Youth Citizens Academy!
We’re incredibly proud of each of you for completing this journey with such energy, curiosity, and dedication. Your eagerness to learn about the world of law enforcement and your openness to building connections with those who serve our community have made a lasting impression.

This graduation isn’t the end — it’s the beginning of a new chapter. The knowledge, insight, and experiences you’ve gained here are tools that can help you be thoughtful leaders, active community members, and strong voices for positive change.

No matter where life takes you — whether it’s a future in public service or another path entirely — know that we believe in your potential and are proud to stand behind you as you grow. Keep making a difference — your community is counting on you!

Congratulations to the Jennings Elementary Magnet School Class of 2025!
As they close one exciting chapter and step into the next! Your hard work, growth, and big hearts have brought you to this special moment — and we couldn’t be prouder.

From learning your first multiplication facts to discovering the power of kindness and teamwork, you’ve shown us what it means to be dedicated, curious, and full of potential. As you head off to middle school, remember: you are leaders in the making, and your community is cheering you on every step of the way.

Congrats to the Bennie Dover Jackson Multi-Magnet Middle School Class of 2025!

You made it through tests, group projects, last-minute homework, and tough days — and now you're READY to take on what’s next!

Remember to:
  • Be a leader, not a follower
  • Be kind — lift others up
  • Dream big & never stop reaching
Always remember: You don’t have to be perfect — just keep going.

Your voice matters. Your light shines bright.

And the world is waiting for the greatness only YOU can bring.

Major Steps Forward in Childcare for Our Residents
Deep gratitude to State Representative Corey Paris, State Representative Kate Farrar, Commissioner Beth Bye, Governor Ned Lamont, our amazing legislative colleagues , and the powerful voices of early childhood advocates across Connecticut!
After decades of tireless work, we’ve made HISTORY by passing HB 5003 — creating a groundbreaking early childhood endowment that positions Connecticut as a national leader in supporting families and expanding access to quality child care .
This is more than a policy win — it’s a transformative milestone for generations to come.
Thank you ALL for being part of this game-changing victory  — the future is brighter because of YOU!

Miraculous Medical Breakthrough with Neuromodulation Event
I had the great opportunity to attend the "Miraculous Medical Breakthrough with Neuromodulation" event featuring Dr. Christopher Connor, an extraordinary neurosurgeon leading the way in innovative treatments for veterans.

Hosted by the Veterans Disability Task Force and MicroTransponder Inc., this event showcased groundbreaking therapy that offers new hope for healing and recovery.
💡 Thanks to strong advocacy and bipartisan commitment, we were able to secure critical funding this legislative session to support these life-changing treatments. This is a big win for our veterans who deserve the best care we can offer.

A special thank-you to Sherri Vogt, Linda Blick, Representatives Henry Genga, Hubert Delaney, Jamie Foster and the many advocates who have worked tirelessly to help make this possible.

Together, we’re investing in innovation, honoring our heroes, and building a better path forward.

Major Drop in Overdose Deaths in Connecticut
Connecticut’s Opioid Services Division was established in 2018 in response to the growing overdose crisis and to expand statewide access to the prevention of opioid use disorder, opioid treatment, recovery support, harm reduction, outreach, engagement, and overdose prevention coverage with a focus on overdose deaths. This marks the third consecutive year of decreases of statewide overdose deaths.
The division manages projects and initiatives that resulted from infusion of State Opioid Response grant funding as well as those approved by the Opioid Settlement Advisory Committee. Some of 2024’s improvements include:
  • Expanded innovative services in the state, adding three and continuing to support original Harm Reduction Centers in municipalities with highest morbidity rates: Hartford, Waterbury, New Haven, and New London
  • Added outreach services via Peer Navigator Programs in two areas of the state;
  • Distributed close to 60,000 naloxone kits (naloxone is a lifesaving, overdose reversal medication), exceeding the state saturation goal for the year.
  • Hosted a successful and informative Harm Reduction Conference. The conference included four expert speakers from around the country, as well as two panel discussions, focused on addressing equity, and stigma, 390 individuals attended the conference: 263 in person and 127 virtually.

While we are heartened to see data going in the right direction, we know there is much more work to do to fight this public health crisis. Our hearts are heavy for the 990 individuals who lost their lives to overdose in 2024 and their loved ones whose lives have been forever altered. We remain steadfast in our mission to expand access and availability of life-saving medication, public education, harm reduction, treatment and recovery supports until no lives are lost to drug overdose.
Additional information is available on the DMHAS Opioid Services Division website at http://portal.ct.gov/.../opioid-treatment/opioid-services.

2025 Pathways to Success: Trailblazers and Innovators in Youth Justice Annual Conference
This week I had the honor of attending the 2025 Pathways to Success: Trailblazers and Innovators in Youth Justice Annual Conference hosted by the Tow Youth Justice Institute, and I’m still energized by the passion, brilliance, and dedication in the room.
Congratulations to all the trailblazers and innovators who were recognized this year — your work is shifting the culture of justice across Connecticut and beyond. From policy reform to community healing, your bold leadership is changing lives and creating real, lasting impact.

A heartfelt thank you to Erika Nowakowski, Brittany Lamar, and the entire Tow Youth Justice team. Your vision and commitment to putting young people first made this event unforgettable. Shoutout to the staff, speakers, youth leaders, and volunteers who brought it all to life — your hard work and heart were felt in every moment.

Visit to the School-Based Health Center at NL High!
Had the great opportunity this week to visit the School-Based Health Center (SBHC) at New London High School Multi-Magnet Campus. 🙌
A big thank you to the dedicated team who welcomed me:
  • Madilynn Delach – Mental Health Clinician
  • Dr. Vera Borkowski – Nurse Practitioner
  • Iliana Beltre – Clinic Assistant
  • Jason Shirley – Mental Health Program Manager
  • Jessica Chan – Director of School-Based Health Centers
As a strong supporter of SBHCs, I know how vital these centers are to the health and success of our students. They provide immediate access to physical and mental health care right inside the school, which means fewer barriers, faster support, and better outcomes.
SBHCs benefit everyone:
  • Students stay healthy and focused on learning
  • Families get peace of mind and support
  • Schools see improved attendance and performance
  • These centers are a lifeline — and a powerful tool for equity, access, and student well-being. I will continue to advocate for their support and expansion across Connecticut!
