Dear Neighbor,
The legislative session is progressing quickly. The Aging, Children, Housing, and Veterans and Military Affairs Committees had their JF deadline this week. This means that the committees must report bills to the floor, wrapping up their work for the week.
For me, the work still goes on with public hearings.
On Monday, the Judiciary Committee heard several bills dealing with the terrifying actions of ICE. As an attorney, I am outraged over the unconstitutional ICE practice of breaking into our homes without a court warrant, a clear violation of out 4th amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. It’s un-American.
On Tuesday, the Executive and Legislative Nominations Committee approved members of the UConn Board of Trustees and the Education Arbitration Panel.
On Wednesday, the Judiciary Committee had a lengthy public hearing on gun responsibility proposals. Other committees had a long day hearing proposals on vaccinations and homeschooling. The Legislative Office Building was bustling.
On Thursday, I presided over the Executive and Legislative Nominations Committee as we took up the nominations of two cabinet members - Susan Hamilton of West Hartford to be Commissioner of Children and Families and Joshua Hershman of Brooklyn to be Insurance Commissioner. You can imagine how many questions were directed at Commissioner Hamilton. I think this is the most difficult cabinet position in the state government, charged with protecting children. She did a great job projecting her vision and compassion. She has a great resume.

Finally, on Friday, I’m catching up on my correspondence and reading. These are always time-consuming jobs, but the ones I cherish the most. I get to hear from and answer questions from my constituents.
