Dear Neighbor,

March 25 was Equal Pay Day, which signifies how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. It's a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality in the workplace.

In Connecticut, we’re making strides with legislation like the Pay Equity and Opportunity Act, which strengthens pay transparency, prohibits salary history inquiries, and ensures fair pay for all workers, regardless of gender. Together, we’re working toward a future where EQUAL WORK means EQUAL PAY for everyone.

Our society has normalized the systemic discrimination and undervaluing of the women workforce, especially of Latina women and women of color. Our whole economic system is based on that exploitation, so when we try to change that system and stop normalizing systemic discrimination through our bill HB 6517 which requires employers to post salary range transparency when posting a job, we are met with doubt by male committee members who feel that the status quo working fine and nothing needs to be changed,

Maybe for them, but NOT for the majority of us. The status quo is based on the undervaluing of the female-led work force: that's childcare, that's teachers, that's nurses, that's social workers like me. It’s time we update to the global talent workforce landscape. Stop wasting our time, and post the range.

Antisemitism Community Conversation

In light of the recurrence of swastikas being painted at Weston High, please join me, Rabbi Friedman and the Mothers in Blue tonight (March 27) at the Weston Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a conversation about antisemitism and how we can respond to it.

Antisemitism, and all forms of hate and bigotry, must be addressed when they occur, because everyone deserves to feel safe in our community.

Bill Voted Out of Committee

I'm excited that a bill on maternal health care that I co-sponsored has been voted out of committee and will be considered by the entire legislature.

The bill, HB 7214, would establish a task force to study perinatal mental health care, establish a report card for birth centers and hospitals providing maternity care, and require the Commissioner of Public Health to convene an advisory committee to study doula-friendly practices in hospitals.

This would be a big step toward improving maternal health care and equity in the state.

I will keep you posted as the session progresses.
