Rep. Dillon: Action on Student Loans

Dear Neighbor,

The federal government has made several troubling changes to federal student loan system.

Starting in July, loans for students in programs designated as professional degrees will be capped at $50,000 per year. Students in other graduate programs will be capped at $20,500 per year. The Graduate PLUS Student Loan Program has also been eliminated. Nursing, physical therapy, public health, social work, and education students have been excluded from the professional category, which means many individuals would have to turn to private loans to pay for their degree.

In Connecticut, we are fighting back on the behalf of our students. The Connecticut Higher Education Supplemental Loan Authority (CHESLA) wants to create a state wide alternative to the Graduate PLUS Student Loan program. This program would be immediately beneficial - once established, grad students will be protected from predatory private loans. This is great news, and I promise to work with my colleagues to advocate for this crucial proposal.

Earlier this year, I joined a working group on student loans. Click here to read more.

Sincerely,

Patricia Dillon
