Updates from State Rep. Gary Turco for Feb. 14, 2025

February 14, 2025

On Tuesday, Rep. Kate Farrar and Sen. Matthew Lesser and I were joined by Newington High School students for Future Business Leaders of America for CT FBLA Day!

I am so proud of all of these students for their commitment to leadership, innovation, and our community!

The Housing Committee on Thursday held a public hearing on a very important piece of legislation I am helping to write, HB 5002 - AN ACT CONCERNING HOUSING AND THE NEEDS OF HOMELESS PERSONS.

Over the past month, a group of legislators that I am part of has been meeting with advocacy organizations, industry groups such as real estate agents and home builders, and individuals who have experienced homelessness to hear ideas for what should be included in this legislation.

Earlier in the week, the General Law Committee, of which I am vice chair, heard testimony on legislation I co-introduced to stop the sale of pets from large commercial out-of-state breeding facilities, aka puppy mills in CT.

I want to thank everyone who testified in support of the billing, including the CT Humane Society for testifying in support as well.

The General Law Committee also heard vital testimony on

  • Proposed H.B. No. 5162, which would expand the protections for victims of domestic violence by prohibiting access to vehicle-tracking data.
  • Proposed S.B. No. 971, which would provide oversight of hotels, motels and inns for the purpose of preventing human trafficking.

The committee is also reviewing several proposals from Attorney General William Tong that Rep. Turco supports, including a social media bill to protect children from addictive algorithms, price transparency and regulation of buying concert and other tickets online, and protecting consumers against price gouging and shrinkflation.

As your tireless advocate at the State Capitol, I will continue to fight for what's right for the 27th District and the state.

If you have any comments, questions or concerns about any of the proposed legislation, or any issue for that matter, please reach out to my office.
