Celebrating Juneteenth in Milford

June 18, 2025

I had the honor of attending the annual Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony at Milford City Hall, where I delivered remarks entitled "American Epiphany." This powerful tradition, now in its fifth year since it began in 2021, continues to grow in meaning and impact for our community.

Juneteenth stands as a profound moment of truth in the American story -- a day that commemorates the long-delayed news of freedom reaching the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. It is a solemn reminder that freedom, while promised in our founding documents, was not granted to all at once. And yet, Juneteenth is also a celebration of resilience, culture, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.

I want to thank the organizers, city officials, and the many residents who came together to raise the Juneteenth flag high above City Hall. Your presence and commitment ensure that this chapter of our shared history is never forgotten. We must remain focused on building a more just and inclusive future for all.
