Remembering 9/11 & Senior Volunteers Recognized

September 11, 2025

This week, we pause to remember the victims and fallen heroes of the attacks on September 11. We honor the lives lost, the bravery of first responders, and the resilience of families and communities forever changed.

The community recognized a group of amazing seniors who continue to volunteer their time in their later years. I'll explain how they continue to make a difference for our children.

This weekend, Spanish speakers who live in Waterbury have an opportunity to access city resources and nonprofits in their native language. Keep reading to see when and where that important event is taking place.

Remembering 9/11

On September 11, we pause to honor the memory of all the victims and the countless lives forever changed on this day 24 years ago. The attacks left an indelible mark in Waterbury and the rest of the nation.

This morning, I attended a remembrance ceremony in Waterbury, which included a solemn bell ringing and moment of silence recognizing those we lost that day.

Our community will never forget those whose lives were stolen from us, nor the courage of the first responders, construction crews, service members, and everyday citizens who ran toward danger to save others, and who worked tirelessly in the days and years that followed to help our country rebuild. Their bravery and sacrifice remain a testament to the resilience of the American spirit.

Let us continue to stand together, hold close the memory of those we lost, and ensure that future generations understand the weight of the day and the strength that carried us through it.

Seniors Recognized For Their Service

Moments after the 9/11 ceremony, the community paid tribute to a group of seniors, dedicated to serving the children of our great city. The crowd at Rotella Interdistrict Magnet School gave this amazing bunch a thunderous applause because they compassionately serve as foster grandparents there.

I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Genovese, who is 94 years young and continues to passionately volunteer her time. She is a member of the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP), which is a National AmeriCorps Senior volunteer program. It allows low income seniors like Barbara to impart their wisdom to children in Head Start Programs, day cares, PreK classes, child development centers, and some public schools. Today, we learned the program received more funding to continue offering this amazing service.

Ms. Barbara has served as a foster grandparent for at least 25 years and will continue to support our children with encouragement, care, reading, and whatever is needed to set them up for success. She has been a positive influence and feels the love in return. Thank you for your service, Ms. Barbara!

Spanish-Speaker Resource Fair

I encourage families in Waterbury to attend the Spanish-Speaker Resource Fair on Saturday from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Liberty Park. This is an opportunity for our Spanish-speaking community to access resources and city services in their native language. 25 local nonprofits will be available to answer your questions.

Additionally, there will be live music, Latin-based food trucks, and vendors to maintain a fun atmosphere for everyone.
