Dear Neighbor,

This week, I was pleased to welcome State Rep. Jane Garibay, House Chair of the Aging Committee, to the Calendar House where we presented a check for $99,700 to a group of seniors and Southington’s Director of Senior Services, David Lapreay.

I am proud to have facilitated the collaboration between Town staff and House leadership to earn this state funding, which will be used for an outdoor fitness initiative and capital improvements to our senior center. My official press release (linked here) has more details about project.

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks as always for taking the time to read them!

Head of the Class

During a recent visit to Southington High School, I had the opportunity to meet up and reconnect with Rich Aroian, who has been appointed as the next principal of SHS. Mr. Aroian was my seventh-grade geography teacher at DePaolo Junior High School during the 1987-88 school year. During our brief conversation, I congratulated him on his new position and shared memories from his class that had made an impact on me as a student. I wish him well and look forward to supporting him in his new role as principal.

Open Space Grant

Several months ago, I shared information on the Connecticut Recreational Trails Program with members of the Southington Town Council, and in turn, Councilor Chris Palmieri brought forward the state funding opportunity to the Open Space Committee.

The committee subsequently submitted a grant to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to construct a bridge on a trail at the Novick’s Orchards open space parcel, which was approved this week. I am proud to collaborate with Southington’s elected officials and Town staff on projects that improve our community’s outdoor recreation areas and open space parcels.

Session Recap

On Tuesday, June 25, I will be hosting a legislative session recap event at the Southington Community Cultural Arts (SoCCA), at which I will share highlights from the 2024 Legislative Session and answer constituent questions. Hope you can join me.

Swim and Splash

The pool and splash pad at Veterans Memorial Park on Woodruff Street are scheduled to open for the season this Saturday.

The pools at Recreation Park on Maxwell Noble Drive are scheduled to open for the season on Saturday, June 15.

The pools and the splash pad are open seasonally to Southington residents though each resident with proper ID may bring one non-resident guest. Proof of residency must be presented in order to gain entry. There is no fee to use the pools.

Secure Your Load

Unsecured loads are dangerous, illegal, expensive, and preventable. As we take more beach and camping trips, etc., keep these steps in mind!
