Dear Neighbor,

I strongly condemn the Trump Administration’s decision to offer student loan forgiveness and $50,000 signing bonuses to recruit ICE agents while ignoring the millions of working-class Americans crushed by student debt.

This policy is not just misguided - it is a moral failure.

The Trump Administration’s goal to capture 3,000 immigrants a day comes with student loan forgiveness for ICE recruits, but not for the millions of Americans drowning in debt.

Imagine what forgiving loans for 3,000 borrowers a day would do for our economy, our communities, and our future.

Government should be a force for good. It should lift people, not single out a select group for reward while millions continue to drown in debt.

By prioritizing immigration enforcement over the needs of teachers, nurses, social workers, and everyday borrowers, this administration reveals the worst in us. It ignores the inequities baked into this incentive and turns its back on millions of dreamers who have tried to forge a new path for themselves and their families.

This is why state legislatures must be the last line of defense.

In Connecticut, we will resist any state partnerships that assist ICE recruitment.
We will advance state-driven student loan relief that prioritizes working people and demand federal action that treats debt relief as a right for all, not a tool for selective reward.

The American dream must belong to everyone who works for it. Connecticut will not stand by while debt forgiveness is used to deepen inequality.
I will continue to fight for policies grounded in fairness, equity, and dignity for every person.
