Dear Neighbor,
South Fork Wind Project Tour
This week we had the great opportunity to tour the first U.S Utility Scale Offshore Windfarm. This project The South Fork Wind Project has and will benefit New London, CT, the local economy in several different ways.

1. **Job Creation:** The project will created jobs during its construction phase, providing employment opportunities for local residents. Additionally, there will be ongoing employment opportunities for the next two projects which are 5/6 times larger.

2. **Economic Stimulus:** The project can inject money into the local economy through spending on goods and services from local businesses, such as the hotels, restaurants, and suppliers.

3. **Tax Revenue:** Wind projects often generate tax revenue for the local government, which can be used to fund public services and infrastructure improvements.

4. **Clean Energy Investment:** By supporting renewable energy projects like South Fork Wind, New London can position itself as a hub for clean energy innovation and attract further investment in the sector.

Overall, the South Fork Wind Project will contribute to economic growth and sustainability in both New London and Connecticut as a whole.

Meeting with New London Director of Economic Development
This week I had the great opportunity to spend some time with the City of New London, Connecticut Director of Economic Development Felix Reyes at the construction site of our City of New London Community Center. I was happy to see the vision coming to fruition with a greater amount of steel, brick and mortar going up.

Director Reyes was able to show clearer area's of where the Pool, Recreation Dept, Concessions, etc etc are going to be. The project is coming along great. Thank you Director Reyes for great visit to area.

Peace Officers Memorial Day
On Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. Their valor will forever be remembered.

U.S. and state flags in Connecticut were lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset.

Governor Ned Lamont signed a great bill we passed this year codifying a Connecticut policy that provides financial and health benefits to the families of officers who die in the line of duty. Having relief as such for families helps relieve a heavy burden that can help bring comfort to families and honors those who provide service as such to our communities. Thank you Gov Ned Lamont for signing this into law.

Fallen Officer Fund
Connecticut law enforcement officers have our backs every day. We owe it to them to support their families and stand by them. From now on, if a police officer or trooper is killed in the line of duty in our state, this fund will offer immediate support to their family.

The Fallen Officer Fund will:

  • Provide $100,000 to the surviving family members or beneficiaries of any Connecticut local or state police officer killed in the line of duty or who sustained injuries that were the direct and proximate cause of the officer's death.
  • Allow the surviving family members of police officers killed in the line of duty who were covered by that officer’s health insurance at the time of their death to remain on that coverage for up to five years.

Housing Affordability Conversation
This week we had a great group of advocates and supporters of not only affordable housing but low income housing come out and have great conversation on changing the narrative around housing affordability in Southeastern, CT. Thank you to the Center for Housing Opportunity, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and CT State Three Rivers for this much needed discussion. United Way did an amazing job breaking down the ALICE Data.

ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, is a new way of defining and understanding the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget. For far too many families, the cost of living outpaces what they earn.

Coast Guard Personnel Protection
The U.S. House of Representatives voted late Tuesday night to pass Rep. Joe Courtney’s bill to prevent Coast Guard personnel from being punished for minor offenses when reporting a sexual assault.

The provision passed as part of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2024.

“I’ve worked over the last decade to institute safeguards to prevent and address sexual assault across the Coast Guard ― a serious issue that was brought to light because of the courageous cadets and faculty who brought this to my office’s attention in 2018,” Courtney, a Democrat who represents Connecticut’s 2nd District, said in a statement.

New London Black Heritage Trail
Great time to experience the New London’s Black Heritage Trail. Take a drive or walk and envision three centuries of Black strength, resilience, and accomplishment. Some of the trail’s fifteen sites explore nationally known people or incidents. Others honor people who have been nearly forgotten. Nearly all describe the determination with which New London’s Black community overcame obstacles through personal courage and by founding institutions to meet its social, political, economic and spiritual needs. Together, the sites tell a story about Black life in New London while tying into larger stories about enslavement, the Great Migration and the struggle for civil rights.
