Bright Future for Roberto Clemente School

I am thrilled to share two exciting updates from the Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School on Beecher Avenue. First, the school is set to undergo a major renovation and expansion, and second, the state has recognized it as a School of Distinction for its outstanding work in the classroom.

The upcoming renovation and expansion represent a transformative investment in our students and our community. Once complete, the school will offer immersive bilingual education from Pre-K through 8th grade, expanding beyond its current Pre-K through 1st grade programming. The project will introduce modern learning environments and new facilities, including specialized classrooms, enhanced STEM and arts spaces, and welcoming community areas to support student growth and family engagement.

Equally exciting is the school's designation as a School of Distinction, a prestigious honor that reflects exceptional academic achievement and progress. This recognition is a testament to the dedication, talent, and heart of the students, educators, administrators, and families who make this school thrive every day.

As the first school in our city to bear the name of Roberto Clemente—the legendary Puerto Rican baseball player, humanitarian, and civil rights activist—this school carries a powerful legacy. Through its commitment to bilingualism, cultural pride, and academic excellence, Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School continues to honor that legacy while preparing future generations of Waterbury students to succeed in a diverse and global world.

Legislative Breakfast in Waterbury

It was great to attend the Waterbury Regional Chamber Legislative Breakfast for a valuable opportunity to connect with business, nonprofit, and civic leaders. We were pleased to hear from Governor Ned Lamont, who spoke about the importance of continued economic growth, workforce development, and strategic investment in communities in the greater Waterbury area.

The conversation reinforced a shared commitment to strengthening our local economy, supporting small and mid-sized businesses, and ensuring that ongoing development creates opportunity for residents across the region. Events like this highlight the strong partnerships that are essential to keeping Greater Waterbury moving forward.

Celebrating Black History Month

From local organizers to national trailblazers, Black history lives in every corner of Connecticut. This month, we reflect, learn, and honor the rich cultural heritage of our Black community members while recognizing their lasting contributions to our society and to the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.
As a proud member of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus (BPRC), I remain committed to advocating for communities of color in the Connecticut legislature. I will continue working to advance policies that promote opportunity, fairness, and inclusion, and that uplift the voices and experiences of those who have been left out of the decision-making process.

You are invited to several events in Waterbury honoring Black History Month through recognition, uplifting storytelling, and reflection. I encourage you to take part in these opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate our shared history.
