Updates for State Rep. Travis Simms for Sept. 5, 2025

September 5, 2025

The community and I lost a dear friend and a dedicated public servant on Aug. 28 with the passing of Greg Burnett.

Greg’s commitment to Norwalk spanned nearly 30 years, during which he gave tirelessly to the people he served.

From his early years on the Board of Estimate and Taxation to his role as Common Council Member At-Large, Greg was a constant advocate for the needs of all residents. He held various leadership positions, including Council President, Chair of the Finance and Claims Committee, and served on multiple boards, including the Board of Education and Board of Health. His impact was felt not only in the council chambers but in the countless lives he touched through his work with the Norwalk Mentor Advisory Board and the Salvation Army.

Greg's legacy of service, generosity, and love for Norwalk will live on in all who knew him. He will be sorely missed.

Rest easy, my friend.

Minimum Wage Increase

Beginning on January 1, 2026, Connecticut’s minimum wage will increase from the current rate of $16.35 per hour to $16.94 per hour.

The change is required under a state law signed in 2019 that connects the state’s minimum wage to economic indicators, specifically the percentage change in the federal employment cost index. The Connecticut Department of Labor reports that the employment cost index increased by 3.6% over the 12-month period ending on June 30, which accounts for a $0.59 increase to the state’s minimum wage.

This is part of our continuing effort to move people out of poverty and toward a livable wage.

Remembering 9/11

This Thursday, we remember the 2,996 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the thousands who have died since due to exposure to toxic chemicals, and the countless lives that were forever changed. May we never forget the people whose lives were stolen from us through this act of terror, and all of the first responders, construction crews, service members, and everyday citizens who saved lives and helped our country rebuild.
