Eversource Monitoring Storm & Holy Family Shelter Provides Stability

A strong storm that could knock out power to thousands of homes is making its way toward Connecticut. I will provide some tips to better prepare for the potentially dangerous weather.

Speaking of the weather, it's getting colder and an emergency energy assistance program is now taking applications. I'll break down how it works and who's eligible.

Eversource Monitoring Storm

Eversource is preparing for strong wind gusts and rain Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The company believes there is the potential for up to 130,000 customers to lose power across the state due to downed trees and other hazards.

Because of the long duration of the storm, Eversource warns it could take longer to restore power, but crews will respond as quickly and safely as possible.

Residents are encouraged to prepare by:

  • charging devices
  • having flashlights and batteries on hand
  • reporting any outages or downed wires to Eversource.

As always, safety should be the top priority. Never approach downed power lines, and use caution when driving or walking during and after the storm.
 

Emergency Energy Assistance Program

You can apply for assistance through the Generation Power CT (GPCT) Emergency Energy Assistance Program, formerly known as Operation Fuel, now through Monday, November 10. This program offers a one-time grant of up to $500 to help eligible Connecticut households cover electric, gas, or heating fuel expenses. 

Households with up to 75% of the State Median Income (SMI) may qualify. Approved applicants will receive up to $500, which can be applied toward a future fuel delivery or used to pay down a past-due utility bill.

For the best chance of approval, and to make the most of this once-per-year grant, GPCT strongly encourages households to apply when energy assistance is needed most. There are three remaining application cycles this winter:

  • November 2-10, 2025
  • January 2-10, 2026
  • March 2-10, 2026

These cycles give residents multiple occasions to receive help as energy costs rise. Gather your documents early and apply as soon as the windows open.

Let's Talk About It: Holy Family Shelter

We learned about all the incredible services and amenities the Holy Family Shelter offers to those in need in Willimantic. Executive Director Sarah Dufresne shared how the shelter not only offers a safe place to stay but also works tirelessly to help residents rebuild their lives.

Holy Family Shelter welcomes both individuals and families on their most vulnerable days. The facility has very large spaces accommodating families of up to eight people. It's also home to several elderly women who bring warmth and care to the shelter by helping look after the children.
The shelter's talented cook prepares delicious lunches and dinners daily, often incorporating suggestions from residents to make mealtimes feel comforting and familiar. The goal is to create an environment that feels like home while families work toward finding permanent housing.

Access Health CT Open Enrollment

Open enrollment for Access Health CT's (AHCT) health and dental insurance is open now and ends Monday, December 15 for plans beginning at the start of the new year. Residents can enroll until Thursday, January 15 for plans beginning in February.
You may have received a letter in the mail warning of health care premium price increases starting January 1 due to legislation passed in the U.S. Congress this year. Currently, the federal government is shut down as those price increases are debated and negotiated. 

As it stands, state officials in Connecticut are encouraging residents to hold off on enrolling in the AHCT plan as the debate continues over those price increases. If you are able, please wait to enroll until the issue is fully resolved.

Please have the following information and documents prepared for you and anyone else in your household, even if they don't need coverage:

  • Dates of birth
  • Social security numbers
  • Visa, green card, or immigration documents
