Dear Neighbor,
Congratulations to Manchester for being named one of Sustainable CT's Climate Leaders of 2025 and for receiving Gold-level certification for the town's actions towards climate justice!
The Gold-level certification and Climate Leader designation reflect the town's efforts to be a sustainable community. The Town of Manchester Sustainability Commission actively works with Town officials to make recommendations on how Manchester can enhance its sustainable efforts, both through government operations and community efforts.
Sustainable CT is a statewide municipal certification program that recognizes the sustainability achievements of local governments. Communities must complete sustainability actions to get certified, which cover a wide range of areas.
Some of Manchester's sustainability actions include:
- Reduced energy consumption by 15% since 2013 in municipal and Board of Education buildings.
- Achieved verification for Buckley Elementary School as the State of Connecticut's first Net Zero Energy K-12 school and the first publicly funded net zero K-12 project in New England
- Partnering with Manchester Land Conservation Trust, Inc., which has preserved over 350 acres in Manchester, which are maintained for passive recreation and open for public use.
- Created a partnership between ECHN and Blue Earth Compost to introduce food waste collection and recycling for the Manchester hospital cafeteria.
- Piloting a residential food scrap drop-off program where food waste is taken to a facility for composting.
- Permanently protecting a significant amount of land near the reservoirs and dedicating it to providing reliable and clean drinking water in the community: approximately 4,000 acres.
To create a sustainable and vibrant future for Manchester, it will require the whole community to take action. To learn about what you can do as a resident and check out upcoming events focused on sustainability, visit www.manchesterct.gov/Government/Sustainable-Manchester.
