Updates from State Rep. Travis Simms for March 14, 2025

March 14, 2025

I am pleased to announce the Community Investment Fund has recommended $1.75 million in funding for two vital Norwalk projects.

Open Door Shelter, Inc., which I have personally championed, would receive $250,000 for its campus expansion project. Project Open Doors' mission is to end homelessness in the Greater Norwalk region by guiding every person in the cycle of being unhoused toward housing stability. Open Doors intends to develop a plan to expand its operations within the South Norwalk neighborhood by assessing its existing housing portfolio and exploring the acquisition of abutting properties.

Friends of the Norwalk River Valley Trail would receive $1.5 million for the completion of the Norwalk portion of the Norwalk River Valley Trail. The NRVT is a recreational and transportation amenity in Norwalk that, once finished, will run from Danbury to Norwalk.

As the state representative for Norwalk, I am pleased that both Open Door Shelter and Friends of the Norwalk River Valley Trail are receiving CIF grants for their respective missions. I want to thank the CIF board for recommending funding these important projects, which serve as a reminder that while it's funding for infrastructure, it's truly investments in people. I will continue to serve as a tireless advocate for more funding for Norwalk and the region to improve all residents' quality of life.

CIF is a statewide funding program available to eligible towns and nonprofits within them, based on need. Applicants – either municipalities or a nonprofit – can submit applications multiple times annually. This round of funding totaled $77.1 million.

The state bonding commission will vote on these projects at its next meeting.

New City Official

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling this week announced the appointment of Jay Habansky as the city’s new chief of economic and community development.

Mr. Habansky will oversee several key departments, including Planning and Zoning, Code Enforcement, Business Development and Tourism, and Transportation, Mobility, and Parking.

Congratulations!

St. Patrick's Day Weekend Reminder

This St. Patrick's Day weekend, Connecticut's Department of Transportation reminds residents to celebrate responsibly and never drive impaired.

St. Patrick's Day is one of the deadliest days on our nation's roads. The DOT has several safety tips to enjoy this holiday responsibly, including:

  • Designate a sober driver before going out, or plan to use a ride-sharing service, taxi, or public transportation to get home safely.
  • Prepare in advance by installing ride-sharing apps on your phone and saving local taxi numbers. Visit CTtransit.com for bus schedules or CTrail.com for train services across the state.
  • Be a responsible friend by taking the keys away from anyone who is impaired and helping them find a sober ride home.
  • See something, say something by calling 911 if you spot an impaired driver on the road.

Driving under the influence puts your life, along with passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians, in danger. Enjoy the holiday, and make the responsible decision this St. Patrick's Day.
