Earlier this month, the Public Safety and Security Committee held a public hearing on a proposed bill that I put in with Senator Martin Looney. HB 7119 An Act Concerning the State Fire Prevention Code, State Fire Safety Code, State Building Code and Elevator Inspections, comes in response to complaints my office has received regarding elevators that have broken down in New Haven's Bella Vista Apartments. The bill would require elevator inspections for places like Bella Vista and require reporting the duration of any time elevators are down, and for how long, so that the state building inspector is aware.
Senator Looney and I are hopeful that this should help with dealing with any future compliance issues and ensure there are necessary working elevators that residents depend on.
